March 28th 2009

We hit the road at 8:00 am this morning after my Dad treated us to breakfast at McDonald's at 7:20 this morning.

We headed out as Lancaster MN for our first destination to pick up our mail. Then we drove on the 59 HWY through Thief River Falls and then through Detroit Lakes. We had to bypass Fargo and other areas because of the flooding and the many roads which were closed. The flooding in the areas we drove were not too bad but the rivers were definitely swollen and very full!

The drive in the morning was beautiful and the hoar frost was wonderful to look at!

The roads were very good and the most ice we saw on a road so far was about 10 miles out of Grunthal. Otherwise we have been traveling on very good roads.

I drove till about 6:00pm this evening and just before deciding where we will stop Chris drove to where we are currently staying.

We have driven a total of 11 1/2 hours and have made it to Charles City IA! Seeing is how we didn't have a destination, we didn't have to "make it" anywhere to a hotel, we just stopped when we were done.

Julia is an AWESOME traveller and keeps herself well occupied with reading, drawing, a movie, and watching our the window. She took over the camera in the Twin Cities while Chris navigated for me. The picture of the man in the car was her idea and she laughed about that one!

We stopped in Thief River Falls at the Wal-Mart for a brief pit stop. (Do you expect anything else from me?) We didn't stop long and headed out soon.

We stopped in a small town just before the Twin Cities at a local Culvers for some frozen custard. If you haven't tried their frozen custard, it's almost a reason to drive down to Grand Forks to get some! And if I knew it wouldn't melt I would bring you all back some!

We also stopped in a little town called Frazee, which Jacklyn mispronounced Fereeze, which caused some laughter in in the truck and a prompt correction on the real name. Why did we stop in Frazee? It hosts the World'sLargest Turkey which you see Julia sitting by. Also so we didn't get too homesick we took a picture of the Canadian geese at the same roadside park. :) The turkey statue being so large and all, Julia couldn't help but notice the big butt at the back, she thought that was hilarious!

We saw the cutest dog hotel called 'Four Legged Lodge" and it truly looked like a real hotel as you passed by but then looking back, you see the kennels out back. I wish we had gotten a picture, but you know... I was driving, and that should say it all!

We made it to Minneapolis on one tank of gas and thought that was pretty good. Chris keeps an eagle eye on my speedometer so we can get the best gas mileage. You better believe it's hard for me to not try and keep up with all the people passing me! Minneapolis felt very hairy for me as this was my first time driving in a crazy city with a freeway and Chris programed the GPS to go right downtown! GRR! Give me Winnipeg any day! But Chris is a good navigator and along with "Anna" telling us where to go we'll do fine. Anna is the voice from the computer program we use on our laptop to navigate with our GPS.

So as I sit and type this out, my family is lying in the bed at the Super 8 here in Charles City. We hope to get an early start after our Free Continental Breakfast in the morning. How Mennonite eh?

My ambition is to post something every evening, but we will see what time and tiredness allows. We will head out to Cedar Falls IA tomorrow then on to Dubuque, then on to Kentucky. Call us crazy, but so far so good and we'll go while the going is good. We only have to be in OH for Wednesday.

I look forward to all your comments!

Jacklyn

Aren't road trips fun??!! I had a dream last night that you came by our place for a visit on Monday(tomorrow); I asked "why are you here and not on your holiday?" and you said "we decided not to go, it was our first real holiday and we were too scared." I'm so glad that that didn't happen!

Looking forward to more adventures from the Friesen's.
